On a Whim is a summer group show of paintings, but a summer group show with more bite and pith than is usual on such occasions. For one thing, it purports to offer works that "express the moment between states, transition from one ideal to another, movement between planes of existence."
To that end, there are paintings here that encapsulate the moment in ways that are -- remarkably -- neither sentimental or pretentious. . . Ian McLean has here come up with his best piece ever in Crack, a domestic interior divided by a vertical slot of colour that illuminates just one of the objects in the room -- an idea sufficiently fecund that McLean can now mine it for a good long time.
